Synopsis
The Vietnam class was part of the fallout from Project Nancy.
Timeline
The class was inducted on November 1st, 2004, after seven months of signups. Seven months previous the 3rd ID server was one of the busiest online. Then, over the spring, server traffic began to tail off. Several new realism units, such as the 1st Jgr. went on line and player population became spread out among new and established realism units. A new group of recruits began to form on the server over the summer as the game switched over from Call Of Duty to Call of Duty: United Offensive.
The impression was received by the potential recruits that something had gone wrong somewhere. Regular 3rd ID players began to become scarce, with a few exceptions. It seemed as well as though something was delaying a BCT being accepted. Early in October, rumors of something called Project Nancy began to filter through and some of the new group actively discussed switching to Brothers in Arms, not realizing the difficulty of doing multiplayer of that platform.
The first crack in the Vietnam class happened when BullDawg was banned from the server.
He was a retired Marine with tour of duty in Vietnam. He was, by his own admittance, an ornery cuss. In his sixties when he began to play on the 3rd ID server, he had some difficulties in "normal" server behavior, having difficulty in spelling and a tendency to slip into curse words when typing. But he was well liked and respected for his real world experience.
On Oct 09, 2004 He was kicked from the server by Ambrose and had a meltdown of historic proportions.
"He had been playing on a day when the server had been invaded by a bunch of TK'ers back when there was a storm of them. He was on Foy, Base Assault, guarding one side with the 88. I guess he had typed out on team chat to stay away from that side, but being BullDawg, he probably wasn't that clear. After hitting a number of allied tanks Ambrose kicked him, per server rules. He had always played with his heart first and his head second (maybe third) but getting banned (not realizing he could apologize and maybe get unbanned) was the last straw." - Pfc. Brooks
He posted an obscene rant in every subforum (they were just as quickly deleted by Lt. Donavan) Left to join the 82 and then went to parts unknown.
Late in October, word was filtered through that a class was going to be accepted soon.
